The War of the Shadowplague

When Orcus came and cast his evil shadow on the Nerath Empire some 450 years ago, he brought with him from his home in The Shadowfell undead legions bent on destroying all life in Koval. He would have the Empire fall first, and from there stage his attack on the entire world. Had he succeeded in this, it is certain the world at large would lay in ruins at his whim.

In the first wave of many, his trusted underpriest Kalarel brought his wraith down upon the Capitol City of Nerath, the central hub city of Fallcrest, and the village of Fastormel. While Nerath and Fallcrest managed to withstand the initial waves of undead sent to them, Fastormel failed to cope with the dread Dracolich Ro’Thax, who laid waste to the entire town. None survived, the entire area laying in ruins.

After a year of sustaining such attacks, the Knights of Gardmore would eventually form their greatest attack against the Demon Prince. Orcus’ power had stretched far beyond the Shadow Rift in the Cairngorn Mountains, encompassing much of the Nentir Vale by that point, but they had not claimed the Abbey. A small but strong contingent of some 500 knights contained within launched an attack on the Riftgate, managing to seal it, leaving the manifestations of Orcus, Ro’Thax, and Kalarel stranded on the Prime Plane, weakened, and vulnerable. Within two months, their threat had been utterly destroyed by the Knights of Gardmore, and over time, peace would return, slowly and uneasily, to the Nentir Vale.
